If your AirPods case is loose or won't close, these four simple checks will help you diagnose and fix the fit. Learn what to look for and when to choose a different case.

Quick Fixes

Most AirPods case fit problems come from using the wrong generation case, improper alignment during installation, or debris trapped under the lid. Here are four checks to solve it.

Why Fit Matters More Than You Think

A case that doesn't fit properly won't protect your AirPods from drops or pocket dust. A loose case can fall off entirely, while one that's too tight may warp the hinge or scratch the charging contacts. Getting the fit right is about both protection and longevity.

4 Common Fit Mistakes & How to Fix Them

  • Wrong Generation Case: AirPods 1 & 2 share the same case size, but AirPods 3 and Pro models are different. If you bought a case labeled for AirPods 1/2 and your AirPods are Pro, the case will be too large or too small. Check your AirPods model number (on the underside of the lid) before purchasing. Match your AirPods generation exactly to the case label.
  • Case Not Aligned During Installation: Many cases require you to slide the AirPods charging case in from the bottom or top at a specific angle. If you force it straight down, the edges may catch and the lid won't close. Gently tilt the case as you insert it, pressing the corners into place. If the lid won't shut, remove the case and reinsert at a slight angle.
  • Debris or Dust Under the Case: Lint, pocket fuzz, or dust can accumulate between your AirPods charging case and the protective cover, creating a bulge that prevents a snug fit. Remove the case, wipe both surfaces with a dry cloth, and reinstall. A quick clean often solves a loose or bulging fit.
  • Case Material Is Too Stiff or Too Soft: Hard plastic cases can be brittle and may crack if forced. Very soft silicone cases can stretch over time and become loose. If you've tried all the above and the fit is still off, the case material itself may be the issue. Consider a mid-durometer silicone or a soft-shell plastic case (like the Delia's Marble Finish model) for a balance of grip and flexibility. If the case consistently feels loose or too tight, choose a different material type.
